Making a Difference in Kids’ Lives … Even the Nasty Ones

“I work with amazing people who love young people and love to help them and want to help each other help young people.”

Derek Smith teaches language arts at Renton High School in Washington and is the founder of the educational blog, a site where teachers tell stories from the classroom and investigate the concept of the “magic teacher.”

Today he posted a video entry at the conclusion of the first day of his new semester. It’s a funny, candid and ultimately inspirational look into the behind-the-scenes interactions that occur between staff and faculty members.

Teachers investigate class rosters, swap stories, give tips, advise cautionhe did what?!—while always collaborating on the ultimate purpose of the profession: to make a difference in young people’s lives. Take a few minutes and watch Derek’s hilarious and heart-warming video.
