Key Curriculum, a privately held developer of mathematics learning technology was acquired by McGraw-Hill Education yesterday. Key Curriculum provides math learning software for K-12 educators and is the developer of Sketchpad, a geometry software program popular with teachers who use interactive whiteboards. The company also offers the statistics and data software Fathom and the probability program TinkerPlots.
As the national market for STEM education continues to increase, the business move is poised to elevate McGraw-Hill Education’s position as a mathematics education leader. McGraw-Hill Education CEO Lloyd G. Waterhouse gave this statement in the official press release:
“With the advent of the Common Core State Standards and an increased national focus on the teaching of math, the acquisition of Key Curriculum allows us to better meet the evolving needs of digitally minded students, instructors and schools. Key Curriculum brings to McGraw-Hill Education a range of products with the capability to bring math to life for a new generation of learners as well as one of the most trusted and respected brands in math education technology.”
The Common Core State Standards is a U.S. education initiative sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, which follows testing-based education reform. The K-12 standards are designed to better prepare students for college success and have been adopted in 46 states.
McGraw-Hill Education will sell Key Curriculum products as standalone solutions to private parties in addition to school districts. “Customers using McGraw-Hill Education’s math programs can expect deeper integration between these products and Key Curriculum solutions in the future,” said Christine Willig, senior vice president of STEM for McGraw-Hill School Education.
McGraw-Hill Education has offices around the world in North America, India, China, Europe, the Middle East and South America. The acquisition may represent a chance for further international growth, as Key Curriculum already boasts a foundation of international sales.
