According to punk rock singer and artist Henry Rollins, education is what will level the playing field for all people in our country, much to the fear of the elite classes and politicians. Rollins gets pretty political in the video (embedded below), criticizing politicians for the state of the education system and making the point that if more people were educated, the prison population would plummet.
Rollins also criticizes the politics behind the No Child Left Behind Act: “The dismal failure of No Child Left Behind is that when you teach to a test, you’re basically just trying to get reelected…They learned the test, but they didn’t learn how to learn.”
Rollins speaks out against the current education system, claiming the system “doesn’t teach you how to think.” Instead, he says educators need to “Teach the ability to learn. You teach discipline, focus, application…[this way,] someone can open up any book, and have the interest, the focus, and the discipline to pursue the knowledge contained therein. That way they can become a plumber, or an astronaut, because they have the mindset that says ‘I can achieve, I want to achieve, and I’m gonna sit here with this damn book for eight hours and I’m gonna get it because I learned…how to sit down, shut up, and apply myself.’”
