Bringing College Courses to the Masses

Today the Wall Street Journal covered startups offering online education courses, featuring Udacity Inc.

Free online courses, like those found on Udacity, extend educational opportunities beyond the university walls. For example, Udacity co-founder Sebastian Thrun, used to teach a small lecture class at Stanford but his artificial intelligence course on Udacity reached over 160,000 students across 200 countries with 23,000 completing the course.

The article mentions other edtech startups offering free educational courses online, including Khan Academy, Coursera, and Codeacademy. While free online courses extend educational materials more broadly than traditional university courses, some worry that completing online classes will lack value compared to receiving a fully accredited education.
