This weekend, USA Today covered the growing tech scene in New York. While Silicon Valley is traditionally known as the major tech hub in the U.S., New York startups have been raising more venture capital funding over the past few years.
Education tech companies are popping up across the east coast. The article featured Coursekit, a company aiming to improve learning and communication among students, that was founded by 20-year-old Joseph Cohen in New York City. Coursekit is similar to Blackboard software but offers more interaction and collaboration as students create a “mini-social network” for their classmates. Coursekit has raised $6 million from IA Ventures and Social Capital Partners.
New York is catching up with California for venture capital funding, with tech companies raising $1.22 billion for 208 deals in 2010.
